<abstract displayLabel="Summary">De los tres pilares en los que fundamentalmente se asienta el sistema bancario español -bancos, cajas de ahorros y cooperativas de crédito-, éstas últimas constituyen el conjunto de menor entidad por sus recursos. Pero su número es importante y más aún su función actual y futura, al estar extendidas por todo el país, con algo más de 3.000 oficinas. En este trabajo, el autor, tras mirar la historia de estas entidades y sus avatares, al contexto europeo, donde en los más importantes países el cooperativismo de crédito tiene una presencia importante y mirar hacia adentro en el momento presente, para hacer recuento y reflexión sobre lo ya andado, pretende escrutar el futuro de estas entidades, las cuales, pese a sus problemas, pueden y deben cumplir un digno, y hasta necesario, papel en la economía de nuestro país, como lo cumplen sus homónimas en otros. Porque en el contexto europeo es de desear que España no sea diferente</abstract>
