<abstract displayLabel="Summary">Debido a la revolución de la industria del automóvil, las autoridades se han visto obligadas a mejorar paulatinamente las carreteras, y los fabricantes de vehículos han sido presionados para incorporar sistemas que proporcionan más seguridad. Sin embargo, continúa existiendo un tercer factor no controlable: el conductor, responsable de un gran porcentaje de accidentes. Para reducir este porcentaje se empezaron a desarrollar, a partir de los años 60, los primeros atenuadores de impacto, que son elementos de protección que evitan que los vehículos fuera de control choquen con elementos estructurales fijos instalados en la carretera</abstract>
