Asbestos, a hazard after the fire / Stwart Dowding
Sumario: After a fire has affected a building, it is understandable for an owner to want to return to the premises as soon as possible to start recovery procedures and minimize consequential losses. However, organizations should be aware that there may well be a risk from asbestos fibres after a fire, especially if a building is more than 15 to 25 years old. Buildings of this age tend to contain many different asbestos products in the form of roofing materials, lining and ceiling boards, as well as lagging around hot water pipes, cylinders and boilers. Different types of asbestos may be present, including white (chrysotile), brown (amosite) and blue (crocidolite) asbestos - which all have slightly different properties and varying degrees of toxicity
