Sumario: This paper deals with the problem of sampling airborne dust for the purpose of assessing the potential risk to the health of human beings arising from the inhalation of such particles in their places of work. Over the years, a wide variety of approaches to the problem have evolved and we feel that it is timely to attempt to evaluate and, if necessary, restate the essential working criteria. This paper sets out first to review the background, next to identify the elements which are necessary for good sampling pratice and finally to examine in that light how some typical practical systems perform
