Sumario: An ergonomic approach to designing breathing apparatus for escape requires knowledge of the physiological and temporal changes in escape performance caused by the addition of respiratory protection. No investigation has been published that has systematically examined the interactions of each of these three variables: increased breathing resistance, CO2, and hot air, on simulated or actual escape performance. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of three individual stresses, and various combinations thereof, on performance time for a 3.2 km run at maximal voluntary speed
