<abstract displayLabel="Summary">The Occupational Safety and Health Administration expects to issue its ergonomic standard for general industry before Oct. 1, 1994. That's good news for workers who are subjected to stressful repetitive motions every day. But this proposed standard, although it will be more broad in scope and the first to mandate ergonomic compliance, is not OSHA's first attempt to ease ergonomic stress at work. In 1991, a high incidence of cumulative trauma disorders prompted OSHA to publish ergonomic guidelines for the meatpacking industry. OSHA said the incidence and severity of CTDs and other injuries and illnesses in this industry demanded effective programs to protect workers from these hazards</abstract>
