Sumario: The purposes of this study were to evaluate lumbar paraspinal electromyographic (EMG) activity during the stance phase of gait when loads are carried in a position anterior and posterior to the trunk and to test whether myoelectrical activity of the paraspinal muscles during the stance phase increases when a load is carried in the hand ipsilateral or contralateral to the muscle. Additionally both male and female subjects were studied to determine whether particular loads or carrying positions required different amounts of back muscle activity on the basis of gender
