<subfield code="a">It is commonly assumed by sociologists, natural scientits, and educated laymen that there are substantial differences between the natural and the social sciences. For seven years the author has been conducting empirical studies in which he has compared various aspects of both the cognitive and the social structures of the natural and the social sciences. This paper presents a theoretical integration and interpretation of all the data collected thus far. The paper begins by examining the commonly accepted views about the ways in which knowledge in the natural sciences differs from that in the social sciences</subfield>
