The analysis indicates that YPLL attributable to each occupational accident exceeds the YPLL for each cancer fatality by a factor of approximately 2.6. The authors conclude that any comprehansive consideration of remedial activities at hazardous waste sites should consider both the public health benefits as well as the public health costs. It is therefore critical for risk managers to consider the years of potential life lost associated with remedial activities, along with other factos such as societal equity and voluntary vs. involuntary risk, when making remediation decisions at hazardous waste sites
