Tsuchiya et al. (1989) reported the use of a quasistatic method for examining changes in pupil accommodation following near vision. A certain number of normal subjects were found to show long-lasting pupil constriction followin the short but strong near vision. This pupil after-effect lasted in some cases for more than 15 min. Interindividual differences in this after-effect were large. The pupil after-effect was sometimes dissociated from the adaptation of tinic accommodation. This paper aims to report on a phenomenon revealed by further investigation using this method. This is that in a proportion of subjects, including a significantly large number of VDU (Visual Display Unit) workers, large and slow pupillary oscillation, so-called "hippus", was found to be evoked easily following near vision
