<abstract>Recognising the danger posed by the continued use of these firefighting agents, the world community through the Montreal Protocol agreed on a schelude to phase out halon and the European Commission (EC) introduced a new Regulation 2037-2000, which prohibits its use in Europe from 31 December 2003, with certain defined exceptions. The article outlines the management and recycling issues to be addressed before halon is finally banned at the end of 2003</abstract>
