The particular stimulus for this article was the debate over the safey of the RHIC supercollider experiments now underway at Brookhaven, ad the ALICE experiments proposed by CERN. Speculation about possible disaster scenarios in these experiments led to some pressure for the xperiments to be deferred or cancelled
