The UK service is built on an ethos of saving life. Over the past 25 years , the service has become used to including the welfare of firefighters as an integral part of that ethos. The health and safety of firefighters is not a "bolt-on" extra but part of the sound management of incidents. If fire an other emergencies are dealt with effectively and efficiently, they will be dealt with safety, and vice versa. However, health safety, like other responsibilities of management , does not just happen. This is where risk assessment plays a vital part
