This article proposes a common language for better understanding processes involved in dermal exposure and skin protection. Dermal exposure to chemicals is associated wih both local effects on the skin, that is, dermatitis by irritation or allergic reactions, and systemic effects. For local effects, generally no clear dose-response relationships are known
