<abstract displayLabel="Summary">The purpose of this report is to synthesize what is known about various types of private sector initiatives -- plan design, alternative delivery systems (health maintenance organizations and preferred provider organizations), private utilization review, health care coalitions, worksite wellness programs, new activities of corporate departments, and cost containment activities of hospital trustees. It provides a descriptive overview of cost management efforts that warrant further attention and of specific initiatives that may serve as models those engaged in cost containment activities.</abstract>
