<abstract displayLabel="Summary">El turismo sigue siendo uno de los puntales básicos de la economía española. Durante varias décadas ha jugado un papel clave en el crecimiento español y, aunque atraviesa una fase más compleja y con algunos problemas estructurales, no cabe duda de que seguirá siendo un sector fundamental para la recuperación económica. Este artículo aporta nuevos elementos para evaluar el papel de las act ividades vinculadas al turismo en España. Analiza la demanda turística, lo que obliga a profu ndizar en su composición así como en la oferta tu rística del país, la creación de empleo y la influencia de estas actividades en la productividad. Estudia también el peso del turismo en el saldo de la balanza comercial. Todo ello permite extraer algunas conclusiones que ayudan a definir el peso del sector en la economía española actual. </abstract>
