<abstract displayLabel="Summary">Fitch Ratings expects the improved earnings results of New Zealand non-life insurers in 2012 to continue into 2013. The expectation is based on lower (more typical) natural catastrophe losses, and property portfolios fully re-priced to offset higher reinsurance costs and falling investment returns.
Reported 2012 earnings from New Zealand life insurers are lower, although they come off a relatively high base. Fitch expects these lower earnings to continue into 2013 due to increased competition, tax changes, and lower investment returns</abstract>
