<subfield code="a">The mutual business model dates back hundreds of yearsand it is still going strong. Today, mutuals make up some 40% of the insurance industry market. But change came for this segment of the insurance industry in the 1990s and early 2000s when companies like Prudential and MetLife converted to stock companies as they sought to diversify beyond insurance and gain greater access to capital.
