The Future of automotive sales
Sumario: OEMs and their automotive dealers are facing turbulent times. The world economy is slowing. Worldwide, automotive sales declined by half a percent in 2018 for the first time since the financial crisis in 2009. In the first quarter of 2019, new car sales declined by more than 3.0 percent in Europe and the US, compared to the first quarter of 2018. In China, the automotive market slumped by a remarkable 14.4 percent. Simultaneously, policymakers around the globe are pushing the industry to reduce carbon emissions at a time when some established OEMs are still struggling with huge settlement costs after actual or suspected misconduct concerning diesel engine exhaust controls. As if this were not enough, four megatrends are revolutionizing the automotive business: electrification, autonomous driving, connectivity and the sharing economy. Every single one of these trends is powerful, but their combination is profoundly disruptive for the automotive industry. Advancements in electrification and autonomous technologies require enormous investments while ridesharing and other shared mobility concepts threaten to reduce overall turnover for OEMs.
