520  ‎$a‎The 2011 Tohoku earthquake struck Japan's north eastern coast and Tohoku region. It was the largest in Japan since modern instrumental recordings began 130 years ago, triggering a destructive tsunami. The total insured loss from the Tohoku earthquake was estimated at around $35bn with the estimated economic cost more than $300bn, making it the costliest natural disaster in history. The destructive tsunami waves contributed a substantial portion of the total damage and highlighting the importance of sub-perils to the quantification of the financial risk of large offshore earthquakes.
