520  ‎$a‎Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BES) underpin all economic activity in our societies globally and should be part of strategy discussions across financial services. Already today, 55% of global GDP is moderately or highly dependent on BES, according to our own research. The impact on financial assets is also enormous: The Dutch National Bank estimates a staggering EUR 510 billion or 36% of all investments from Dutch financial institutions would be lost if the ecosystem services underpinning the Dutch economy were no longer available. The implications of BES decline have been a topic for us for many years. In recent times, we have noticed an increasing interest among our clients in the topic as all stakeholders start to understand how BES affects asset values and the economy in general. This has implications on the re/insurance industry, but also offers opportunities.
