The Russia-Ukraine war has further disrupted a global food system that was already facing immense challenges in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Before Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukraine produced enough food to feed 400 million people worldwide, according to the United Nations World Food Programme. Together, Russia and Ukraine accounted for around 27 percent of global wheat exports. This report analyzes the state of food supply around the world, explains the nature of the current food crisis, and illustrates how climate change will almost certainly bring about the next food emergency.
