This article analyzes how present bias and time-inconsistent behavior affect retirement planning and health decisions. It develops a life-cycle model with hyperbolic discounting and endogenous biological aging, calibrated for Germany. The study shows that inconsistent saving decisions tend to delay retirement, whereas inconsistent health-related decisions tend to bring it forward. The dominant effect depends on individual circumstances, such as income levels and preferences for unhealthy goods. Although deviations between planned and actual retirement ages may be small, their consequences for health and wealth are substantial, leading to reduced longevity. The analysis also explores how pension system design can influence adherence to original plans and discusses implications for public policy
