For substances that may descompose in the industrial environment forming highly toxic secondary polluants a computer simulation of the decomposition process gives useful information to the industrial hygienist. This paper presents a model for the decomposition of a gaseous substance contacting a hot surface. Application of the model to carbon tetrachloride being oxidized to phosgene etc. on a silica surface indicates that the decomposition may be of hygienic importance from circa 200-250ºC, a much lower temperature than expected from published laboratory investigations of CCl4
