<abstract displayLabel="Summary">At a meeting in New York in 1964 of the Working Group on Asbestos and Cancer of the International Union against Cancer, it was recommended that priority should be given to research on the health effects of exposure to the various types of asbestos fibre and to the elucidation of exposure-response relations. As a consequence of this and at the invitation of the Canadien government a comprehensive series of studies, directed at all aspects of exposure to chrysotile asbestos, was begun by the group at McGill University in 1966, initially with support from the Institute of Occupational and Environmental Health of the Quebec Asbestos Mining Association and later from other granting agencies. Over the past 25 years this research programme has widened in scope to include the effects of exposure to amphibole fibres and other types of industry</abstract>
