Electrodes containing barium compounds as fluxes for use in arc welding have been examined. Fume from a cored-wire electrode with barium fluoride flux was found to contain more than 16% barium, which was substantially soluble in water or dilute acid. Exposure of a group of welders to such fume resulted on elevated barium urinary levels. Fume from stick electrodes having barium carbonate in their fluxes contained about 15-30% barium in readily soluble form. Recommendations are made concerning the control of occupational exposure of welders to barium
