Characteristics of blood-containing aerosols generated by common powered dental instruments / Robert L. Miller
Sumario: The study was conducted in vitro, in isolation, by the author using his own blood to avoid the potential infection hazard associated with the deliberate aerosolization of human blood that may contain pathogens. The study was undertaken to determine rates of production, particle size distribution, persistence, and blood content of aerosols generated by powered dental instrument forces, and the filtration efficiency of nine makes of surgical masks worn by dentists primarily for prevention of occupational infection. Such finite data would be fundamental to support a hypothesis for an airbone route of occupational infection by HBV in dental professionals
