<abstract displayLabel="Summary">Muchas personas de los países en vías de desarrollo no tienen acceso al equipo que se requiere para elaborar vacunas modernas. Lo que sí poseen es acceso a la agricultura. Por consiguiente, las plantas podrían ser una forma de producir vacunas. Si se pudiera producir la proteína inmunogénica en el tejido de una planta comestible, se podría reducir el costo. Los científicos que trabajan en el Boyce Thompson Institute confían en utilizar un método directo del vector bacteriano para crear técnicas de producción de bananos que salven vidas. En primer término, fragmentarán el gen de la proteina de una enfermedad estimuladora del sistema inmunológico en "agrobacteria". Cuando se expone a las células del banano, la "agrobacteria" transborda el gen que se encuentra en el interior. Luego, los investigadores harán un cultivo de las células en plantas maduras que tengan frutos que, al ser ingeridos, otorguen un grado de inmunidad para una enfermedad específica</abstract>
