<abstract>El sistema de pagos ha sido siempre una pieza clave en el buen funcionamiento del sistema financiero. Los avances informáticos, la interconexión de sistemas y el desarrollo de nuevos mercados e instrumentos han abierto un intenso debate en estos últimos años sobre la influencia que el sistema de pagos puede tener sobre las economías, los riesgos sistemáticos que puede provocar y las vías para evitarlos. La vigilancia del sistema de pagos ha ido configurándose como una función diferenciada que cuenta cada día con mayor importancia. El artículo propone un marco para dicha diferencia recogiendo, en especial, el papel que los bancos centrales y otros agentes deben desempeñar</abstract>
