<abstract>El artículo analiza cuáles han sido los factores que han guiado el proceso de cambio estructural de la agricultura mundial y el papel que ha prestado el proceso de globalización a tal cambio. La fuerza  de cambio importante ha sido la transferencia internacional de tecnología, conocimiento y capital que ha tenido lugar pese a las restriciones a los flujos comerciales de productos agrarios y, en algunos casos, motivada precisamente por tales restrinciones. Estas fuerzas de cambio continuarán ejerciendo presión sobre la agricultura en las áreas rurales, con independencia de lo que ocurra en el seno de la Organización Mundial de Comercio</abstract>
