In 2019, the line generated a combined ratio above 100 for a ninth straight year, and it continues to face challenges on numerous fronts: nuclear verdicts, distracted driving, inadequate safety precautions by drivers, other frequency and severity challenges, or just being slow to adapt to current technology and modeling innovations already widespread in the personal auto line. These challenges have helped prevent a notable improvement in profitability, even before COVID-19 upended every segment of the insurance industry.</abstract>
