<abstract displayLabel="Summary">Twenty-first century insurance executives, agents and others involved in financial services likely, will remember the last decade of the twentieth century as a period of transformation -both in the United States and worldwide. The latest market conduct difficulties experienced by many U.S. life insurers are but symptoms of this transformation. As such, it is wrong to view them in isolation from the more profound changes of which they are a part. This article highlights the environmental and industry-specific factors that together make an irresistible force for change and suggests some principles to guide future action</abstract>
