Sumario: In this paper the authors Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to examine the relative efficiency of insurance distribution by marketing channel and ownership structure. They find that direct writers are more efficient, than independent agents, and that stock firms have significantly higher than the mean efficiency than mutual firms. They empirically demonstrate that the efficiency of insurer ownership is interrelated with the marketing channel: a direct writing mutual is more efficient than a mutual company using independent agents; independent are more efficient for a stock company than for a mutual company. Additionally, they find that across all organizational forms and distribution systems, large insurers are more efficient than small ones
