The study was prompted by the fact that leaded petrol is still used in Lucknow. Also, the authors were aware that a traditional Indian eye cosmetic "surma" contains lead, and might pose a hazard for women who use it through exposure to lead. This study was part of larger ongoing study of the effect of maternal exposure to lead on neonatal birth weight and other outcomes of pregnancy</dc:description>
