Several large technology companies are establishing themselves within the market of wearable technology, with the hope that 'quantifying the self' will encourage healthier behaviour, habits, and, ultimately, health. There is an opportunity and interest from some life and health insurers to encourage the use of wearable devices to engage a healthier segment of the population, as well as motivate healthy behaviours in their policyholders. While these devices are gaining increasing popularity, they are limited in terms of their long-term effectiveness, their ability to attract the individuals who would need and benefit from them the most, their true ability to track and engage individuals regarding their health, and importantly, ability to significantly change health in the long run
