In the Nordic region - Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden - the stock of electric cars has been expanding steadily since 2010. It reached almost 250 000 cars by the end of 2017 and accounted for roughly 8% of the global total of electric vehicles (EVs) in 2016. The Nordic región has one of the highest ratios of electric cars per capita in the world. In 2017, the sales of new electric cars in the Nordic region reached around 90 000, up 57% from the previous year and setting a new record in absolute terms. The market shares of electric cars of the Nordic countries are amongst the highest globally, and the average for the region is 10.6%. Taken together, the Nordic countries represent the third-largest electric car market by sales volume in the world, after the People's Republic of China (hereafter "China") and the United States.
