Inaction now threatens the very existence of human society: the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns that averting the most serious consequences of climate change requires a radical overhaul of the global economy1, while the OECD argues biodiversity loss is among the top global risks to society. Importantly, the intersection between these crises deepens their effects. For example, deforestation is a major cause of biodiversity loss while also being the second largest source of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, growing inequality, the changing nature of work, and continued human rights violations are just some of the major risks facing global society and the financial sector that supports it. At the root of many of these problems is short-termism: businesses and financial organisations seek short-term return without accounting, or being made to account, for the externalities of their decisions. Cumulatively, these externalities have devastating long-term impacts on people and the planet, but the perceived incentives for addressing them now are low. Mark Carney, during his time as governor of the Bank of England, termed this problem the tragedy of the horizon.
