The most commonly used methods for the determination of lubricating oil mist exposures involve sample collection on glass fibre or mixed cellulose ester filters and analysis by gravimetry or by i.r., u.v. or fluorescence spectroscopy. Such methods have been studied and experimentally compared, with the aims of evaluating their capability of giving reliable results and defining the most appropriate procedures, their limits and their fields of applicability. Oil mist exposures have then been determined on worksites where drilling, diecasting, glass and concrete mould lubrication are performed: mean exposures were less than 3 mg m-3
