<abstract displayLabel="Summary">Los hidrocarburos constituyen una fuente de energía cómoda que inevitablemente tiende a acabarse. Por eso es tan importante la biomasa, es decir, la masa de cosas vivas que pueblan el planeta. Como productores potenciales de energía nos encontramos con plantas y árboles, fácilmente convertibles en alcoholes, por ejemplo, en metanol. Y esto es lo bueno: ya hay motores de automóvil que pueden funcionar con metanol. De ahí a prescindir del petróleo queda sólo un paso. El metanol es uno de los elementos que sirve para hacer funcionar una pila de combustible: funciona con oxígeno e hidrógeno. El oxígeno puede ser utilizado como elemento aislado o puede ser extraído directamente del aire. El hidrógeno también puede conseguirse de varias formas: utilizando alguna forma de hidrógeno puro o sacándolo del metanol, etanol u otros compuestos, a través de un proceso químico, que se denomina reformado, algo que se se produce dentro del propio sistema mecánico del coche.
