<abstract>En diez años los paiíes de la Europa Central y Oriental han tenido que introducir importantísimos cambios en sus sistemas económicos, políticos y sociales para adaptar sus estructuras a a las propias de una sociedad abierta y plural. Con grandes diferencias entre países y con un notable esfuerzo, están logrando dar el dificil salto que supone pasar en tan corto espacio de tiempo de la economía planificada a la economía de mercado creando las instituciones y mercados propios de la economía capitalísta moderna, y reestructurando sus sistemas productivos para comerciar con la UE y co el resto del mundo. En el presente artículo se analiza este proceso, haciendo hincapié en los dos retos que se abren para Europa del Este en estos momentos, es decir, culminar su transición y prepararse para su proxima incorporación a la Unión Europea</abstract>
