The article reports on a study of effective middle managers working in large corporations. Managers who fostered innovative, growth-oriented accomplishments shared a set of personals qualities: thoroughness, persistence, discretion, persuasiviness, and comfort with change. Perhaps, they weren't firebrands or rule breakers. Rather, they worked through existing networks to uncover opportunities, build coalitions, and make change happen
