<abstract>El término de zoonosis fue creado por Virchow en el siglo XIX a partir de dos palabras griegas: zoo (animal) y nosis (enfermedad), si bien etimológicamente se traduciría como "enfermedad de los animales" considerándose todas aquellas enfermedades que sufre el hombre debidas al contacto con los animales. Según la OMS, desde 1959, el término de zoonosis fue descrito como "enfermedades e infecciones que se transmiten naturalmente de los animales vertebrados al hombre y viceversa"</abstract>
