<subfield code="a">The global insurance and reinsurance industry doesn't face the same challenges as the Soviet era communist party. A superficial look at the industry suggests that everything is in pretty good shape. Both the primary and the secondary sectors are well capitalised and reasonably profitable after a relatively inexpensive cat year. The global economy is no longer going backwards and there are pockets of growth around the place. But look further and deeper and there are big challenges to do with competition and growth, regulation and interest rates, capital convergence and emerging ris ks. And that's befare starting to consider a return to the new normal of costly catastrophe events or other shock losses. This guide to the markets goes some way to setting the scene for 2014 - and it might be business as usual. But 2014 might just be the year that the old arder gives way to change -- Non-life premium volume share 2011-2012 -- Real growth in premiums written 2011-2015 -- Global top 25 insurers by non-banking assets in 2012 -- Global top 25 insurers by net premiums written in 2012 -- Top ten global economic loss events in 2013 -- Global risks 2014</subfield>
