Last month marked the 15-year anniversary of the attacks of 9/11, an event that changed the world so dramatically it is difficult to imagine what life would be like if it had never happened. In addition to the incalculable human and political damage, the financial services industry was also devastated, not least the insurance market. The means by which people travelled between countries and states changed forever, as did the way tourists chose where and how they travel abroad. Some 15 years on, however, the nature of international terrorism has also changed. The rise of the Islamic State has seen terrorists now targeting high profile tourist hotspots, rather than staging larger one-off catastrophic events as seen on 11 September 2001. Post examines whether the travel insurance market has kept up with these changes, and whether insurers are doing enough to protect travellers going abroad.
