This paper has considered possible future directions in insurance supervision in light of emerging challenges. First, it argues that the industry is remarkably healthy given the very significant events it has endured over the past two years. Second, it suggests that to the extent there as challenges they relate to traditional insurance supervisory challeges, particularly the problems of pricing and managing risk on long-term contracts, amplified by the increased complexity and an increased pace of change. Finally, current developments in insurance supervision are driven by the increasingly complicated nature of the industry's risks, both on the investment side and the underwriting side
