It is the oldest association of state government officials in the United States. State insurance commissioners are charged with the duty of protecting consumer interests while practicing fair and reasonable regulation of the insurance industry. The most important duty of insurance commissioners is to help maintain the financial stability of the insurance industry -that is, to guard against insolvencies.
