<subfield code="a">The impact of the ageing population in the Western industrialised nations has long been debated and discussed. Germany is now expected to encounter a shortage of labour from the year 2010 onwards. The Pension Reform Act, which was passed in 1989 before German unification, has been in force since 1.1.1992. One of the interesting features of this Act with respect to the question of opportunities for extending the working period is the introduction of the partial pension. The partial pension enables a gradual transition to retiremen, also beyond the normal retirement age to date, namely 65. Introducing partial pensions is an attempt to achieve objectives that gerontologists, especially, had argued for, such as the avoidance of an abrupt transition to retirement, or the extension of the working period within the life course and reducing the duration of full pensions, thus leading to a lower financial burden caused by pension insurance. However, extending the working period in Germany is not an acceptable political solution, given the present level of more than 4 million persons registered as unemployed</subfield>
