El texto recoge en lo sustancial el contenido de la conferencia impartida por el autor en el acto de inauguración del "IX Encuentro Euroamericano Riesgo y Trabajo" que, organizado conjuntamente por la Universidad de Salamanca y FUNDACION MAPFRE, tuvo lugar en Salamanca del 13 al 15 de noviembre de 2007</abstract>
