<subfield code="a">China is the second-largest economy, and the seventh-largest general insurance market in the world. Swiss Re predicted that China will become the second-largest insurance market in 10 years. The rapid development of the Chinese economy and insurance industry is powered by the market-opening policies that started in 1979, which have transformed China from a centrally planned economy to a vibrant market economy. The general insurance (property & casualty, or P&C) industry in China has entered a period of sustained profitable growth. Its fast growth can be attributed to an expanding GDP and disposable income, increasing investment in fixed assets, and rising motor vehicle and private home ownership, following China's transition from an agrarian society to a modern industrialized one. And it is still in the early stage of development, with further room to grow. General insurance premium per capita is US$53 in China, compared with an average of US$263 for the world
