These are challenging times for the workers compensation market. The current recession and associated layoffs have resulted in fewer people working, less insurance to cover employees and, until recently, fewer recorded injuries. At the same time, medical inflation is impacting claims, and lifestyle factors such as rising obesity are increasing claim costs. In much of the Western world, the retirement age is increasing, leading to an older workforce that is more prone to accidents and has higher medical costs.
And current changes in legislation, such as health care reform in the United States, make it clear that the need for specialist knowledge in the workers compensation market is greater than ever.
